Garantex Evades Sanctions, Continues Global Crypto Operations
Garantex, a cryptocurrency exchange linked to Russian banks, persists in global operations despite U.S. and EU sanctions. The exchange, accused of ties to cybercrime networks and terrorist groups, was previously charged with stealing $22 million from a U.S. blockchain platform and engaging in money laundering. In March 2025, U.S. and international authorities seized Garantex's digital systems.
Aleksej Besciokov, one of the operators, died in custody in India while awaiting extradition. Sanctions forced Garantex to relocate operations to Grinex, a Kyrgyzstan-based platform, which later faced sanctions for handling billions in crypto transactions, including a ruble-linked stablecoin.
